Chimpanzee Trekking in the Kyambura Gorge- a vast Underground Forest

Chimpanzee Trekking in the Kyambura Gorge – The vast Kyambura Gorge (Chambura Gorge) is part of the Western Rift Valley. Most come here for Chimpanzee Trekking, however’ its beauty, its depth, where you feel that you are exploring another world, a place of mystery and intrigue, of scenic wonders and rugged beauty.

Hiking along its trails, cross its creeks and rivers, look up and all you see the sky, the Kyambura Gorge is one one of the scenic wonders found in the Pearl of Africa.

With all of that, Kyambura Gorge is a great setting for Chimpanzee tracking at the bottom of the Albertine Rift Valley.

The natural setting of the Kyambura Gorge alone is worth a visit since a chimpanzee trek here as of late has not always been productive. We think the Kyambura Gorge, hikes, treks in what seems another world in what BBC called the Lost Valley are well worth a half o day of your time here.

Hiking and Chimpanzee Trekking in the Kyambura Gorge – As you approach Kyambura Gorge, driving across the savannah of Queen Elizabeth Park, you will be surprised when seemingly out of nowhere, there is this huge gash in the savannah welcome to the Kyambura Gorge. The over 16-kilometer longKyambura Gorge is one of Uganda’s Natural Wonders.  On either side of the Gorge which is part of the Western Rift Valley in Uganda, the sprawling Savannah continues as before.

Before you will be one of the most incredible scenes in Uganda, below is the Lost Valley, the Kyambura Gorge. There is a great viewpoint platform from which you can take some great pictures of the Kyambura Gorge surrounded by the Savannah and a rich tropical Forest below with the Kyambura River flowing through it.

Most people during their time at Queen Elizabeth National Park bypass Kyambura Gorge and miss the scenic wonder of it unless they have chimpanzee tracking on their itinerary and then visitors to Kyambura Gorge are simply amazed as to what they find.

Scenes beyond the imagination that show the power of nature in creating this gash in the earth, the serene savannah continuing on both sides of the gorge all making Kyambura Gorge a must-see spot  while visiting Queen Elizabeth Park and another reason this park is called “A Medley of Wonders.:

Enter into the Gorge itself and you will find a lush, rich Tropical Rainforest on the Equator.  It simply is another world.

Whereas on the savanna above there was an abundance of light, of brightness and sunshine, the canopy of this underground forest with its rich foliage blocks out much of the sun unless you are in a clearing and there is no longer a need for sunglasses since you want to take in clearly all that is before you and you do not want to miss anything during your time while Chimpanzee Trekking and hiking in the Kyambura Gorge.

You move through this forest and along the Kyambura River guided by  knowledgeable Uganda Wildlife Authority Guides who will safely take you down the maze of trails of the Gorge, in the “Valley of the Apes” in search of the Chimpanzees that have been habituated, a process that takes up to two years  making the chimpanzees used to humans and continuing with their activities as humans arrive.  There are other primates found here such as Black and White Colobus Monkeys, Red Tailed Monkeys, Baboons, Giant Forest Hogs and other mammals. When it comes to Birding Kyambura Gorge is a birder Paradise and Butterflies abound.

Kyambura Gorge, this gash in the savannah in Queen Elizabeth Park, this hidden secret with its sunken underground forest, this as BBC calls it “Lost Gorge”, this scenic wonders with its rich tropical rainforest and chimpanzees is a must for visitors to Queen Elizabeth Park in the Pearl of Africa.
